Integrated Sensing and Communication (ISAC) turns mobile network infrastructure into a system that can both communicate and sense the physical world. By analyzing reflections from transmitted signals, network sites can detect and track moving objects over a wide area, with low-altitude drones as the first use case. ISAC brings together three areas that have not worked together before: the base station, the sensing function that turns faint reflections into detections, and the fusion function that determines whether detections from different sites belong to the same object.
